Things that irritate me…

When tumblrs I otherwise enjoy do nothing but bitch about, “ooh, it wasn’t like the book,” “they ruined all my favourite bits,” “I can’t believe they changed this and ruined it.”

You know what? It’s not the book—it’s the TV adaptation. Notice that word “adaptation”? That shows that it’s going to be adapted. For TV. As in not the same.

Things that work in books do not always work on TV. In a POV chapter you get to hear about what the character is thinking. On a TV series you’ve got to convey that with dialogue and facial expressions. That’s hard.

Also, you have to keep characters to a minimum. I’m thinking it was easier to introduce Talisa with no family than having to bring in Jeyne, her family, and explain all that.

Most importantly, have you seen how thick the books are? It’s physically impossible to show every major happening in ten hours of television.

That’s why we come back to that word “adapt”.

a·dapt/əˈdapt/

Verb:

  1. Make (something) suitable for a new use or purpose; modify.
  2. Become adjusted to new conditions.

Synonyms:

adjust - fit - accommodate - conform - suit

Now, I like following your blogs, but when I see nothing but bitching as per the above, you turn me right off. Accept that it’s not going to be the book. They’re going to stick to it as much as reasonably practicable. Remember, this isn’t just made for book readers. It’s got to make sense to non-book readers too.

If you can’t see that then you’re really not being realistic. Plus, if you don’t like it don’t watch it.
